Common Justice is working nationally to expand the application of restorative justice to serious violence as an alternative to incarceration through a combination of replication of its New York City-based model, deep dive support of aligned interventions, and training for movement partners.

Common Justice develops and advances solutions to violence that transform the lives of those harmed and foster racial equity without relying on incarceration. Locally, the project operates the first alternative to incarceration and victim service program in the United States to focus on violent felonies in the adult courts. Nationally, it leverages the lessons from its direct service to transform the justice system through partnerships, advocacy, and elevating the experience and power of those most impacted. Rigorous and hopeful, Common Justice builds practical strategies to hold people accountable for harm, break cycles of violence, and secure safety, healing and justice for survivors and their communities.

Common Justice operates a restorative justice-based alternative to incarceration and victim service program for serious and/or violent felony cases such as assault, burglary, and robbery. The project brings 16 to 26-year olds responsible for crimes together with those they have harmed and their support people in a facilitated dialogue to determine appropriate sanctions to take the place of a prison sentence. The project engages and prepares all parties, convenes the dialogues, and provides supervision and support to both those harmed and those responsible for crime. It aims to meet the needs of people harmed by crime, prevent further violence, minimize the unnecessary use of incarceration, and improve people’s experience of justice.

Responsibilities

• The Director of Partnerships and Replication will be responsible for the following duties:
• Lead Common Justice’s strategic partnership work with aligned interventions seeking to divert cases of serious violence from incarceration
• Lead Common Justice’s preliminary work in sites where it seeks to replicate its model
• Develop the plan and structure for Common Justice’s replication and strategic partnership work, including the criteria for site selection, tiers of engagement and support, budget analysis, and adaptation approaches to account for considerations in new jurisdictions
• Co-develop operational plans for new sites
• Conduct assessments of new sites including engagement with local social justice and service provider partners, district attorneys offices, and data analysis
• Supervise additional staff as the project expands over time.

Community Partnerships and System Engagement

•  Identify and develop relationships with partners on the ground to serve as our principal connections in any new jurisdictions
•  Support the development of aligned interventions through accountable coaching, training, and strategic thought partnership as directed by our partners
•  Support partner organizations in navigating and shaping the political environment surrounding the work
•  Engage district attorneys and other system partners in developing and acting on support for diverting violence
•  Support jurisdictions in identifying the best structure for programs to interface with the criminal legal system (i.e. situating the intervention pre-charge vs. post-indictment, referral processes, etc.)
•  Provide targeted support around communications in collaboration with the communications team as needed
•  Provide targeted support to jurisdictions where a deep dive is not viable but where limited support can make a material difference
•  Serve as a project manager and team lead in new jurisdictions
•  Work closely with the Director of Training and partnerships and replication team to coordinate all aspects of Common Justice’s work in this area

Qualifications

• Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
• Experience designing or growing programs across new sites;
• Strong command of the criminal legal system;
• Experience working with criminal legal system actors;
• Experience in restorative justice, violence intervention, and survivor support services strongly preferred;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Experience building and sustaining strong partnerships;
• Experience navigating and shifting the political landscape to support innovation;
• Flexibility and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently;
• Strong project management skills;
• Strong written communication skills;
• Experience leading teams and supervising staff;
• Advanced degree preferred;
• Serious commitment to social justice;
• Formerly incarcerated people strongly encouraged to apply
