About the Opportunity: Common Justice is seeking an experienced organizer who can help the organization win transformative racial justice campaigns that are grounded in the needs of currently and formerly incarcerated people and others impacted by violence. The ideal candidate can create effective campaign strategies designed to build a large base, develop leaders, and center the voices and wisdom of those most impacted by interpersonal, community and state violence. This person should be committed to Common Justice's mission and able to thrive in a fast-paced and evolving work environment, and have a great sense of humor.

The Senior Organizer will report to the Vice President of Organizing and Policy. The salary for this position will be $71-77k.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Senior Organizer will:

• Work with Common Justice's United for Healing Equity team to develop, recruit and retain a member base made up of crime and violence survivors, formerly incarcerated people and their allies;
• Work with members to identify local and state legislative policy proposals that impact survivors of violence and the formerly incarcerated;
• Work with the United for Healing Equity team to develop political education and organizing curricula and workshops for members, partners, and the public-at-large;
• Facilitate regular organizing committee meetings that are informed by members' insights, experiences and expertise and inform members of policy trends and proposals that could advance their campaign agendas;
• Create partnerships, including coalitions, with grassroots organizations that are running campaigns that advance issues that our members' care about;
• Keep track of what current work partners are doing and the support they may need;
• Coordinate local actions with members and partners;
• Represent Common Justice at campaign meetings, when appropriate;
• Work with communications team to represent Common Justice publicly regarding organizing and campaign work including media appearances as a spokesperson;
• Help convene local meetings, townhalls and calls with partners, members and/or public-at-large;
• Work with UHE team on emerging national work;
• Supervise the work of a growing team of organizers.

Job Requirements:

• A minimum of six years organizing experience with grassroots community organization;
• A familiarity with and commitment to the issues that are central to Common Justice's work, including criminal justice reform, ending mass incarceration, and the rights and needs of crime survivors;
• Experience in both grassroots and digital organizing preferred;
• Demonstrated ability to think strategically, and create and implement organizing campaign plans;
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot issues as they arise, make contingency plans, and shift plans as needed;
• Willingness to work with local coalitions and partners;
• Strong critical thinking skills and ability to think creatively and innovatively;
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments;
• Demonstrated commitment to community organizing;
• Demonstrated commitment to working with a racial equity lens both internally and externally;
• Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks;
• Willingness to travel as needed (when pandemic ends);
• A good sense of humor.
