Director of Policy
Jessica Persaud is Director of Policy for Common Justice. Prior to joining Common Justice, she served as Floor Counsel to the New York State Senate Democratic Majority Conference. She also served as Counsel for the Crime Victims, Crime & Correction Committee, Counsel to the Consumer Protection, and Cultural Affairs Committees. In her capacity as Crime Victims, Crime & Correction Counsel, Jessica assisted with the passage of the Humane Alternatives to Long Term (HALT) Solitary Confinement Act, Automatic Restoration of Voting Rights for Formerly Incarcerated Persons, and the Community Violence Intervention Act (CVIA).
Jessica earned her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Philosophy at Florida Atlantic University in 2013 and her Juris Doctor from Albany Law School in 2016. During law school, she served as Project Director for the Prisoners' Rights Pro Bono Project and was the recipient of the Jay H. Milstein Award and the New York State Bar Association's President Pro Bono Service Award. Post-graduation, Jessica accepted the Excelsior Service Fellowship, where she served as Assistant Counsel to the New York State Board of Parole. Upon completion of the fellowship, she accepted a position at the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance in the Economic and Non-Citizen Support Bureau.
Jessica is a first-generation, Indo-Caribbean, Guyanese-American, originally from Queens, New York. She previously served on the Board of the Capital District Black and Hispanic Bar Association and was a member of the Capital District Women's Bar Association's Sex Trafficking Committee in 2018.
